One debate I often hear surrounding veganism is the “meat-like” foods there are and why we like to eat them. And from my personal standpoint, I can honestly say that I used to love eating meat. Steak, burgers, hot dogs, whatever. I used to love going to barbecues and stuffing my face with a little bit of everything. But one thing people have to understand is that for the majority of vegans, it’s not about disliking meat; it’s about disliking the mistreatment of animals.
It’s often hard to accept how the meat, dairy, and egg industries are run. Documentaries like Earthlings, Cowspiracy, and Forks Over Knives give us a look inside this harsh reality, and are a good place to start if you’re wanting to learn more about the vegan movement and its impact on the world.
I used to love meat. And although giving it up eventually made my life so much better, that didn’t mean that the craving wasn’t still there. But over the past few years, vegan meat alternatives have been popping up left and right. Let’s be honest, some of them are a bit funky, but luckily a lot of products nowadays are redefining what vegan meats are all about! And today, I’d like to talk about one of my new favorites…
The Beyond Burger. This non-GMO , soy-free, gluten-free hunk of goodness is packed with 20g of pure plant protein! Let’s see how it compares:
More iron, less fat, and no cholesterol! Nutritionally, the Beyond Burger seems like the obvious way to go, not to mention the fact that it’s 100% plant-based with no hormones or antibiotics!
But how does it compare taste-wise?
This picture alone could answer that question. The first time I made one of these bad boys, I was immediately overwhelmed by the uncanny resemblance it had to a real beef patty. It even smelled similar, although I actually think the Beyond smells better!
To cook, I just added a little steak seasoning and cooked about 5 minutes each side! The smell filled up the whole house and it was just fantastic. I was honestly a little hesitant to try it, because I had been disappointed by fake meats in the past, but I just loaded up all my favorite toppings and just went for it.
And oh. my. gourd. It was AMAZING.
There is no doubt in my mind that this thing could fool anyone. It’s juicy, savory, and everything you’d expect from a burger. I think I might have actually cooked it a little too long because there wasn’t any “pink” in the center, but it’s totally doable! This is probably more for looks than anything, but it makes the experience that much more similar to an authentic beef patty.
Needless to say, I devoured the entire thing within minutes. And afterward I was rewarded with that awesome “full and fat” feeling of contentment.
The Beyond Burger is definitely worth it in terms of a delicious vegan alternative to the real thing. I truly believe that products like this are paving the way for the vegan movement; it makes it that much easier for meat-lovers to get their fix without having to harm a single soul.
And for people like me who weren’t raised vegan, products like this work to fill those cravings to ensure that there won’t be a meat relapse.
