It’s that time of year again! We’ve settled ourselves into the new year (for the most part), and now it’s time to bring on the valentines! This is such a fun time of year, and Had’s been talking about who she wants to send cards to since the day after Christmas.
But when you’re a super busy parent still recovering from the financial devastation of the holidays, you may just not have the time or money to go out and buy all the fancy, extravagant Valentine’s Day stuff for all your loved ones. Luckily, there are a ton of different options you can explore, including making your own fun, cute gifts, that hold much more sentimental value than anything you could buy in a store. Plus, the kids will love it!
Upcycled Valentine Owls
I came up with these super easy and adorable Valentine’s Day owls on a whim the other day, as I was thinking of what I could use some of our stray caps for. I absolutely love to reuse and repurpose things, especially when it’s a surefire way to save a little money! Lately, Michael and I have been saving our bottle caps because I’ve seen so many awesome ideas for them on Pinterest. And of course, with Riv eating like a little piggy lately, I have a surplus of baby food jars and lids on hand as well.
There’s really nothing to these, guys! They require very little time to make and are so so SO simple. This is also a fantastic project to do with the kiddos. 🙂 Here’s what you’ll need:
- Baby food jar lids (or any type of lid, really… as long as it’s clean 🙂 )
- Bottle caps
- Cupcake cups
- Thin cardboard
- Orange construction paper (I used an orange pasta box I had)
- Cake pop sticks (these are just what I had on hand)
- Permanent markers- I used black and red
- Hot glue gun
- Baker’s twine
- (Optional) Candy or some sort of goodie to tie onto the side!
The first thing you’re gonna wanna do is trace the lid onto the cardboard and cut it out. Then fit the cupcake cup around the lid and start gluing it into place on the inside lip of the lid. Start from the bottom and as you reach the top, pinch out two little spots for the ears and then glue the rest down.
Next, cut the beak from the orange paper and glue it onto the middle of the lid. Draw two little hearts onto the bottle caps and glue them onto the front of the lid below the ears.
Then glue the stick onto the lid so that the top of it hits the inside lip. Grab the cardboard circle from earlier and cut a small notch out of the bottom and cold the bottom edge downward so it will go inside the lip of the lid. Write some sort of cute message onto it and glue it down along the edge of the lid and the stick. Here’s a few ideas:
- “You’re a HOOT!”
- “I will OWL-ways love you!”
- “OWL always be your friend!”
- “HOO loves you?”
- “Hope your Valentine’s Day is a HOOT!”
- “OWL you need is love”
Tie on the baker’s twine and whatever treats or trinkets you want to include if you wish and that’s it!
These are a quick, easy to make, and super sweet Valentine’s Day gift for friends and family alike. Plus they’re low-cost and a great way to recycle items that would normally be thrown out! ♥
Until the next project!
