Day 10: Best Trip of Your Life
I’m not a big traveler. Now, before you start thinking that I’m a total lame-o, I should mention that this is not by choice. As you well know, taking trips and exploring the world requires one big thing: money. If this were no object, I would be on a plane every other weekend, travelling to whatever place the “Big Wheel of Vacation Spots” pointed to next. Unfortunately, we’re young and have a baby, so this is a luxury that doesn’t come all the often; when it does though, we take full advantage!
The best trip I’ve had so far dates back to 2010 when my dad, sister and I took a two week road trip across the country all the way to Wisconsin and back. We went through seven states total: Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Minnesota and finally, Wisconsin. We have family over there that we visited with and ended the trip with a super fun country music festival called We Fest, where we got to see Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Joe Nichols, Kid Rock and (almost) Kenny Chesney! (We had to leave the day before he was going to perform.) Pretty cool!
One of my favorite parts of the trip was when we visited my grandparents in Duluth, MN. Lake Superior is so huge!
It actually helped me feel less homesick since it pretty much looked like an ocean! There were these super cool pirate-looking ships giving tours as well- wish we would’ve gone on one!
There were so many other fun things to see as well. Each state had its own unique features as well, constantly reminding me how beautiful nature can be.
Idaho!
Paul Bunyan in Akeley, Minnesota!
Mount Rushmore, anyone?
Legoland at the Mall of America in Minnesota!
I actually have a funny story that I like to tell from this trip… On our way back home, we were passing through North Dakota and my dad was having a hard time keeping his eyes open at the wheel so we decided to stop for the night. (North Dakota = most boring state ever. Except for maybe Delaware…)
Anyway, the motel we ended up staying at was a bit sketchy to say the least, mostly due to the fact that it was in the middle of nowhere because that’s what all of North Dakota is. I don’t really know why but I was extremely paranoid and wouldn’t stop looking around for cameras and what not. As I was examining one of the lovely paintings on the wall, I noticed in the lower right corner that there was a dead ant squished between the glass and the canvas! Grossed out, I turned to my dad to tell him, to which his response was him singing “dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead ant, dead aaaaaaaaant” to the theme of the Pink Panther! My sister and I had a good little laugh at that one, and it was enough to calm me down and allow me to get a good night’s sleep.
All in all, it was a great trip and I hope to do some much, much, much, much, MUCH more travelling now that I have a little family of my own! What are some of your dream vacation spots?
