Couponing 101: Building a Stockpile

May 16th, 2016May 16th, 2016

So, you’ve been on your couponing journey for quite some time now. You are no longer a novice; you are an experienced, deal-scoring, 90% savings-achieving, all-around pro now! You’ve conquered every single deal you’ve come across, and the gettin’ is good! But, with great couponing comes one big problem: where the heck are you supposed to put all this stuff? Luckily, there is an extremely simple solution: start a stockpile.

What is a stockpile?

A stockpile is a collection of products you keep in your home, obtained through the process of couponing. Bascially: a storage solution for all of the sweet deals you’ve scored! Typically, this collection is kept in the basement, garage, or closet, and functions as pretty much a mini “store” that you can take items from without having to leave your house. Pretty cool, right?

Why start one?

Sooner or later, all extreme couponers find themselves in need of a practical storage solution for their products. Having a stockpile is simply the most organized way to display everything you have all nice and neat and keep all the nooks and crannies of your house clutter-free!

So, what’s in my stockpile?

My stockpile has served us extremely well the past couple years. One of the first things to mention is that it’s only one shelf. The reason for this is simple: one shelf has proved to be plenty for my little family of three (soon to be four). Although I could easily expand to two or more shelves if I wanted to, I find that it kind of keeps my couponing addiction under control, in a way; if I run out of space, I take a little break for awhile!

Although I’ve only recently began to actively stockpile again, and my collection isn’t nearly as massive as some of the other ones you may have seen, it has saved us so. much. money. I seriously haven’t had to buy shampoo in over two years (but I do anyway if it’s an awesome deal!).

This top shelf alone holds over 60 hair care products, which is definitely one of my favorite items to stock up on. I regularly switch up which products I use, so it’s good to have a wide variety. There are also nearly 50 body washes and soaps here as well, which (I haven’t actually done the math on yet) will probably last us for… forever. 😉

Here we have all my personal care and health products, including over 20 deodorants and 84 razors. This is definitely the part of my stockpile that gets used the most, so it’s important to keep it up to date and well-stocked. You’ll notice that I don’t have a ton of toothpaste. Because we don’t go through very much, I tend to only stock up on what we’ll use for the year. There are, however, various uses for toothpaste besides just cleaning your teeth, though!

Cleaning products last a looooooong time in our house. I’m pretty sure we’ve been using the same bottle of Windex for the past, like, three years. So again, I have a somewhat limited stock on these types of items; only about 30 or so. One thing we do use quite often, though, are scented candles and melts. I hold about 20 of these kinds of products at all times, to ensure our house always smells fresh and clean and not of dog. 😉

And finally, we come to my favorite part of the stockpile: The Diaper Pile! This collection of nearly 1,500 diapers was pretty much established in just two or three shopping trips throughout my pregnancy, and I plan on doing one more decent sized trip before Baby comes.

My time to stock up on diapers and wipes is during Target’s huge baby sales that they have every few months. Usually they offer a gift card on a certain threshold purchase, so I throw as many coupons and discounts on top of that as I can to spend as little as possible.

What you need to know:

It doesn’t happen overnight. Or in one giant haul. Or, really, in giant hauls at all for that matter. In the few years I’ve been couponing, I’ve actually come to find that the best way to stockpile products is through smaller trips that simply add up over time.

When is the best time to stock up on..? Knowing the sale cycles throughout the year is essential. Knowing when certain products are going to be at their rock-bottom prices is going to score you the biggest savings. One of my favorite couponing sites, The Krazy Coupon Lady, has an awesome list of monthly sale cycles, found here!

Trips may be random, and that’s okay. Different products go on sale at different times throughout the year. To achieve the highest level of savings, it’s important to stock up on certain products when they’re at their rock-bottom price. If that involves purchasing large quantities of barbecue sauce, heartburn medication, and toothbrushes all at once, don’t worry about it!

You shouldn’t buy an item just because it’s a good stock up price. If you see there’s an amazing deal on contact lens solution, but you don’t happen to wear contacts, don’t buy it. (Unless you’re planning on getting contacts at some point, of course.) My point ,though, is that buying products that you’re simply never going to use just because they’re a killer deal isn’t really going to save you any money. However, if a product is needed as part of a bigger deal to score you points, gift cards, or rewards that you can use on products you do use, then feel free to buy it!

Donate, donate, donate! To continue off my last point, if you ever purchase an item as part of a larger deal to score some form of store points, and have no intention of ever actually using it, donation is always a great option. There are always people in need who would be grateful. (Plus, there’s always your friends and family, too!)

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. When the savings start adding up, it’s only normal to start feeling the “coupon high”. Before long, you can (and will) get addicted. Because of this, many couponers will stock up on items pretty much non-stop throughout the year, only to find that they can’t actually use all the products they’ve purchased before their expiration date. Although food products are obviously the main culprit in this instance, there’s also toothpaste, deodorant, and some cleaning products to watch out for.

Getting Started

If you want to start a stockpile of your own, there’s only one real way to go about it: clip some coupons, score some deals, buy a shelf, and watch your collection start to grow. There’s really no extremely specific technique to it. My general rule of stocking up is to aim for a 75% savings or higher.

How We Survived a No Spend Week (And How You Can, Too!)

April 28th, 2016April 28th, 2016

Saving money is important. You know this, I know this, pretty much everyone old enough to know what money even is knows this. So then why are so many people still struggling with this concept? While it’s widely known that saving money is extremely beneficial for countless reasons, this doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily an easy task to accomplish. When it comes to saving, there’s one question that people often ask themselves: what actually works?

In being a stay at home mom with another one on the way, this question has crossed my mind many, many times. Michael being the only one employed full-time can make things extremely tight at times, so it’s not exactly like there’s a ton of money left at the end of the month to throw directly into our savings. Through the use of coupons, budget tracking, and meal planning, I’ve been able to cut back significantly on our monthly spending, but sometimes it still doesn’t feel like enough.

So out of the blue, I decided to take the leap and attempt a money saving method that we hadn’t tried before: a no spend week.

Now, I’ve tried doing this in the past, but have never actually made it the full week. I would just suddenly have bouts of “no extra spending” that would eventually die out as I added ridiculous amounts of unnecessary items to my cart on Amazon. What made this time different, though, was that I had a plan and was determined to stick to it.

First, I categorized all of our spending into two categories: “necessary” and “unnecessary”. While the majority of it fell into the “unnecessary” category, there were a few expenses that I deemed to be unavoidable that wouldn’t count toward our no spending goal:

  • Bills
  • Credit cards
  • Gas
  • Pet food
  • Milk

Let’s be honest, you can’t just go an entire week not paying your bills. Not only is this not going to save you anything, it’s possible that you’ll end up having to pay more in the long run due to late fees. Since Michael drives a lot for his job, I knew I couldn’t exclude gas, but I was sure to limit my driving for the week to help cut back as much as possible. I included milk on the list because it’s something I use several times a day. (Plus I have a toddler who drinks a ton of it!) Other than these five things, everything else, including all other food and household items, was off-limits.

So how did we do? To be honest, the first few days went by pretty smoothly. I already had dinners planned out for the week, so this eliminated any urges to go out. Since we started on a Wednesday, though, by the time the weekend rolled around, I was starting to get a little antsy. We just so happened to have some of the hottest weather we had gotten in awhile, so an ice-cold freezie sounded reeeeaaaally good. After partially getting through the question “what if we-” and then quickly stopping myself, though, I told Michael that we had some huckleberry ice cream left in the freezer that would make for a nice treat.

In the end, I think we did a really good job not spending money. Here’s a summary of how the week went:

What did we actually spend on?

For the entire seven days, our expenses came to:

  • Bills: $342.22
  • Credit cards: $162.00
  • Gas: $35.51
  • Pet food: $0.00
  • Milk: $2.89

Total: $542.62

What did we save on?

Below are rough estimates of the things we normally would’ve spent money on:

  • Groceries: $80.00
  • Gas: $25.00
  • Couponing: $20.00
  • Eating out: $40.00
  • Misc (household, personal, clothing): $30.00

Total: $195.00

What we learned:

It was actually incredible how much our minds had shifted after just a week of not spending money. It was almost like a switch had been flipped, as our mentalities went from “spend, spend, SPEND” mode to “live on what what we have” mode. I was extremely proud of how we utilized the food that we had, which resulted in a bunch of fresh produce getting used up that probably would have gone to waste otherwise.

In conclusion, I definitely think that the no spend week was a success and we most likely will be doing another one in the near future (and may even make it a regular thing)! I encourage anyone out there trying to save money to give this method a try and see if helps you.

Getting started:

  • Determine your necessary expenses- they can be as broad or specific as you’d like. Everything else goes bye-bye for the next seven days.
  • Make a menu for the week. Go through your cabinets, fridge, and freezer and see what you have to work with. Pinterest is a great resource for finding simple and yummy recipes!
  • Communicate. Before you start, make sure your spouse or anyone else involved is informed of all the rules and restrictions.

 Tips:

  • Don’t splurge. I can’t stress this enough! After your no spend week comes to end, the first thing on your mind may be to go out and celebrate or just spend for the sake of spending. DON’T DO IT! Instead, try to ease your way back into it; I’d recommend starting with maybe a grocery or light couponing trip.
  • Eliminate temptation. If you find yourself itching to spend, leave your credit cards at home if you’re going out. If you’re not comfortable doing this, take out an emergency $20 in cash and leave the rest!
  • Keep track of your savings. If you normally buy a coffee every morning, calculate out how much you’re saving every day from cutting that out from your spending. You’re likely to stay more motivated if you know exactly what you’re saving!
  • Stay busy. Lounging around the house is the gateway activity that leads to unnecessary and irresponsible spending. If the weather’s nice, go for a walk or just get outside and play with the kiddos!
  • Pick a week that works for you. I chose to do our no spend week in the middle of the month. Although we still had some bills and credit cards that were due, it was actually better than the beginning or end of the month when rent and a bunch of other bills are due.
  • Start small. If a week without spending seems absolutely impossible for you to achieve, start a bit smaller and go for a weekend if you can, then slowly work your way up to the full seven days.

Have you ever attempted a no spend challenge? Tell me about it in the comments below!

Monthly Bill Pay Checklist- Free Printable!

April 1st, 2016April 12th, 2016

Over the past six months or so, Michael and I have opened up several new credit cards. Since our ultimate goal is to purchase a new car, followed -eventually- by a house, we’ve been trying to build up our credit as much as possible. With all the new due dates to keep track of, I knew that I needed a better way to organize all of my bills than just writing them all out every month and often forgetting to pay them until the very last minute. So! I created this Bill Pay Checklist to help me keep everything nice and organized and ensure that I never miss a payment!

It’s super easy to use, too! Just write out all your recurring monthly bills and expenses in the order that they’re due, write out the amount, and check it off after you pay it every month. This way, everything’s laid out right where you can see it without any unnecessary clutter. And of course, I’m offering this to you guys as a FREE PRINTABLE! Just click the link or the picture above to download and print!

When I first had the idea to make this checklist, I knew I had to put it on here so it could benefit others as well. With life being so busy all the time, it’s always nice to have access anything and everything that might just make it that much easier. 🙂
