Life has a way of surprising you. You never truly know what’s around the corner until it’s smacking you right in the face… repeatedly. That’s what life has been like for us lately. What with financial stress and Reb’s unexpected surgery, among various other things, everything has just been a little crazy.
And if you haven’t noticed already, Christmas time is almost upon us. And for some of people, it’s already here… I am one of those people. Over the weekend, Michael had been telling me that he wanted a real tree this year. Growing up, he remembered always going out and picking out a tree as a family and bringing it home to decorate that same night.
Now, as someone who usually had an artificial tree (we’ve had the same one since we bought our first apartment together), this was a relatively new concept to me. And on one hand, I don’t entirely agree with from an environmentally conscious perspective, and on the other hand, I don’t entirely agree with it from a financially conscious perspective.
Because money has been super tight, extra purchases have been… on hold, to put it simply. But then I went to the store and found something wonderful.
This teeny, tiny Christmas tree! And in light of everything that’s been going on, I decided to surprise my little family with a mini decoration sesh!
It’s called a Dwarf Alberta Spruce, and at only $11.99, it is just the cutest little thing ever and the perfect tree for our frugal Christmas. When I brought it home, Had was definitely the most excited to start decorating.
It was supposed to be just the tree, but then we got a little overboard…
Who doesn’t love tinsel? This is Riv’s first real experience with this time of year; last year she slept for most of it and was less than interested in the majority of the festivities. (With the exception of eating, of course!)
Had, being a bit more seasoned, was very particular about her ornament placement and was an amazing helper!
So we put on some nostalgic Christmas tunes and just decorated away!
Even Lucy got into the holiday spirit! (She’s a huge fan, I can tell.)
And of course, big ol’ Reb joined us by laying right in the middle of the floor in his festive sweater. This is typically how he includes himself in the family business and he’s just been extra lazy in general lately due to his knee injury.
But in the end…
Our tree turned out amazing! It is just the right size and fits perfectly in front of our living room window.
And it was exactly what we needed. In the midst of everything that’s been going on, this couple hours of pure love and joy was welcomed with open arms…
… and lots of dancing! I’m not exactly sure how it started, but we all couldn’t stop dancing around as we worked. And after the tree was all done, Michael and I looked over and saw the girls still dancing away.
So I’m sure you’ve noticed that some people have already begun putting up their trees, or playing holiday music or planning that Secret Santa exchange. And I’m sure that a lot of you are thinking “Woah, pump the breaks a little bit! It’s not even Thanksgiving yet!”
And while that may be true, and it may be a bit early, perhaps it’s best to just let people enjoy what’s considered to be the most wonderful time of the year, even if it is still over a month away. Because sometimes, people might just need that special feeling to last a little longer.
Happy Christmas-Before-It’s-Even-Thanksgiving, everyone! 😉Post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure here.
